The YAO Percussion Ensemble is the first of its kind in Southern Nevada offering percussion students the opportunity to perform chamber music in a small ensemble setting. Led by Manuel Gamazo Jr., the ensemble will be performing new works by American composers highlighting a variety of rhythmic and complex sound effects. The YAO Chamber Orchestra was created with the YAO roots in mind. The ensemble features local & visiting professionals who collaborate with rising YAO students and alumni. Today’s program welcomes back alumni from the very first season of the YAO program. Moreover, the program highlights works from the same season with an eclectic selection from Vivaldi to Mozart, and Piazzolla to Balakrishnan. Mozart’s music has been featured on many occasions throughout the past 5 years. In fact, Mozart’s Adagio & Fugue was the very first piece performed by the YAO, and his Symphony no. 40 closed the season. In contrast, Piazzolla’s tangos have gained “celebrity status” within classical music repertoire for their incorporation of jazz elements, extended harmonies and dissonance, and ventures into extended musical forms. Speaking of jazz, David Balakrishnan composed Skylife for his own Turtle Island String Quartet. The work is full of jazz, blues, and bluegrass elements, which make it an audience favorite.
